MCC student collapses at sports event, dies
A first year BSc (Chemistry) student of the Madras Christian College died during a sports event on the college campus on Monday. The deceased was identified as J Mahima (18), a resident of Professors’ Colony, Selaiyur.

Police said Mahima was playing tennis when she suddenly developed chest pain and collapsed. She was rushed to a hospital nearby, where she was declared brought dead.
Mahima’s father Jayaraman is a pastor in Kelly’s and her mother is a school teacher. The incident happened around 5.30 pm. She seemed to have died due to a heart attack, police said. An autopsy will be conducted on Tuesday, they added.
However, police later in the evening said they are yet to receive an official complaint regarding the incident from the college.
Though students expressed anguish over the college’s policy that all first-year students must participate in a ‘sports for all’ event, which seems to have led to the death of the teenage girl, police, quoting the college authorities, noted that participation was not mandatory.
Mahima’s college mates, while reacting to the incident on social media, claimed she was not well and was forced to take part in the event. They hoped that the college management would change the rule in the coming year.
