DPI set to get a new complex at Rs 400 crore
The much-awaited new DPI complex in the city will be ready for Tamil Nadu’s education-related operations in a high-tech way very soon. Accordingly, all activities in the current building will be shifted to the new complex.

A senior official from Education Department on Friday told DT Next that the existing heritage buildings inside the DPI campus, which will continue to exist, will also get a facelift, while maintaining its present antique.
Pointing out that the design faced a challenge as the site was constrained with heritage structures, located right in the center, the official said that the ground floor of the new structure will be used for public activities and the lobbies for respective departments.
“All office spaces have direct access to daylight and air, reducing electric lighting demand, promoting natural ventilation during the winter days, thus lowering the demand for electrical cooling,” he said. “The distribution of the department surrounds a large and beautiful central courtyard and sculpted land forms providing a gathering space for the staff and students.”
The official said the proposed over 1,000-seat auditorium, constructed on the southern side of the new building, will display information about upcoming events in the auditorium.
According to him, each department in the proposed complex, built at a cost of about Rs 400 crore, will have space for the distribution of meeting rooms, a visitors’ area, storage and supplies, record room, IT room, copy areas, pantry and toilet facilities.
“Since the construction work is going on a fast phase, it is expected to be completed during the next academic year,” the official claimed. He said the tender has been already called to computerise all the activities of the DPI to provide timely and quick services to the students.
He pointed out that unlike typical office buildings, the DPI structure also includes large-scale openings, offering integrated green ‘sky gardens’. Some of the main departments in DPI includes Directorate of Exams, TN State Centre for Research and Training and TN Text Book Corporation.
