An MTC driver said, “Around 500 workers including technicians and maintenance staff work at the depot. We travel for over two km to reach the main junction for some food or beverages. Though there is a canteen in the depot, it serves only lunch.”

Though the employees submitted several representations to the corporation authorities, no action was taken. “The locality has only housing board tenements. It is not yet developed. We even sought the help of residents to open a makeshift stall catering to the demands of employees. However, they are reluctant,” said sources among workers.

The employees are also unhappy with the current arrangement of operating merely four buses per day.

“The pickup buses were scheduled around 11 pm to carry workers to the main road. It means all are made to wait at the facility. Instead, they can increase the frequency of buses for the convenience of the workers,” the source added.

The bus depot operates a fleet of 58 buses that were pooled from Tiruvanmiyur, Adyar, T Nagar, Anna Nagar, Central, Mandaveli and Kannagi Nagar depots.

MTC Managing Director Anbu Abraham said, “This depot is relatively new and functions with all the facilities that are available at the other depots. It is tucked away from the city limits. For better connectivity, two buses each in the morning and night are being operated for the employees attached to the depot. Besides, a canteen is also operated in thebuilding.”
