Wheelchair image with 1,550 persons sets world record
Raindropss and Vel Tech University have set a World Record to support the differently abled. The youth-based organisation and the educational institution created the largest image of a wheelchair with 1,550 people on the university campus on Monday.

The event was part of ‘Vaname Ellai’ held on the International Day of Disabled Persons. The record was officially announced by Vivek Raja, South India Head of Asia Book of Records and certificates were awarded to both the partners.
Talking to DT Next, Aravind Jayabal, founder and creative head, said that the record was part of other activities taken to mainstream people with disabilities.
“We wanted to do our part for the cause of mobilising support for those with disabilities. The image was therefore formed with those with disabilities and the students. It is to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
The overall aim is to show that a person with a disability can be a vibrant member of society,” he added. He also said that the organisation wanted to support the population in all possible ways, especially for ensuring accessibility. On the day of the record, wheelchairs were also donated.
Welfare schemes for the disabled
State government's welfare scheme measures estimated at Rs 16.68 lakh were disbursed to 191 differently abled persons during the commemoration of the International Day of Disabled Persons at Vellore on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Commercial Taxes Minister KC Veeramani said 14,000 differently abled people of the 81,000 in the State would be issued the central government’s disabled friendly ID card soon. He also added that 6,691 differently abled persons were provided a monthly unemployment assistance of Rs1,500 while a total of 1.62 crore differently abled persons were given bank loans to start their own enterprises.
