    Woman SI on bike killed as lorry rams vehicle

    A 33-year-old woman sub-inspector was killed after a lorry rammed her two-wheeler near Padapai on Monday. Police arrested the lorry driver, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

    The deceased SI, Manikuyil from Ariyalur, was residing at Kannadapalayam in West Tambaram. She was attached to Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the city police. The arrested lorry driver was identified as Srinivasan (23) from Kadaperi in Tambaram.


    On Monday afternoon, Manikuyil was travelling to Kancheepuram on a two-wheeler for a personal work. When she was on Vandalur-Walajabad Road at Pakkam near Padapai, the lorry rammed her vehicle from behind. Manikuyil came under the wheels of the lorry and died on the spot.


    Public nabbed Srinivasan, who tried to escape from the spot, and handed him over to the Manimangalam police. Her body was sent to the Chromepet Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.


    11 injured after lorry rams a stationary vehicle


    As many as 11 people of a family, including four children, were injured after a lorry hit a stationary car near Madurantakam in wee hours of Monday. 


    The family was returning home in Tiruvottiyur in an SUV after a temple visit in Pollachi when the accident took place. On Monday around 3 am, while they were travelling on the Tiruchy-Chennai National Highway near Pakkam village in Madurantakam, the vehicle ran out of fuel.


    The driver stopped the car and went to buy the fuel. Meanwhile, a lorry from Tirunelveli, loaded with paper roll, hit their car from behind. In the impact, the car was damaged and 11 people were injured. The lorry driver escaped from the spot after the accident.


    On information, the Madurantakam police went to the spot and admitted Hemalatha (28), Thilagavathi (42) and Muthalagi (45) to the Chengalpattu Government Hospital and others with minor injuries were treated at Madurantakam Government Hospital. The police have launched a hunt for the absconding lorry driver.
