Drunk traffic cop rants over walkie-talkie, suspended

According to sources, Dharmaraj (37) was on duty on Wednesday night at Teynampet. He suddenly started badmouthing his superior not granting leave for the funeral ritual that got over few days ago.

“He suddenly started to pour out grievances through the walkie-talkie, which is supposed to be used only for official exchange of information,” an officer noted. He was under the influence of alcohol, the officer added.

Dharmaraj’s comments were broadcast to other walkie-talkies as well, including those belonged to the top brass, creating an embarrassing situation for his immediate superiors. He was asked to appear on Thursday but failed to turn up, making matters worse for him.

“Like many other days, he was absent today, too. Suspension order was sent to his house,” said a senior officer. Police sources noted that Dharmaraj has already taken leave of 91 days this year, including formal leaves and being absent for duty. He had reportedly gone on leave for several days after his mother’s death on November 5. His request for leave could have been turned down, as he had availed leave frequently, said an officer, alleging that the constable’s absenteeism and alcoholism had been a headache for his seniors.

Grievances, if any, should be brought to the notice of higher ups through proper channel to get redressal, added the officer.
