“The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) was instrumental in conceiving this project. The WRD is the implementation agency – which means that SDMA will allocate sanctioned funds for the works. Once commenced, the project will be completed within 15 months,” said a senior official. An effective system would be put in place to reduce the loss of life and property during the calamities.

Under this project, works would be taken up at Lower Palar basin, Kosasthalaiyar river basin and Araniyar river basin. Among the various works that are carried out are the construction of retaining walls, inlets, additional flood discharge arrangements, and formation of cut and cover macro drain to mitigate the floods.

The places that are deemed highly vulnerable include Pallikaranai marshland, North Buckingham Canal and Red Hills. Officials said desilting works would be carried out in North Buckingham Canal using heavy machinery. Likewise, the construction of retaining wall, inlets, additional earthen channel and formation of bund would be carried out at Red Hills.

Under this project, a provision of flood regulators and additional flood discharge arrangements would be made at Urapakkam, Irumbuliyur, Nanmangalam and Nandivaram tanks in Kancheepuram district.

Corpn to clean up Cooum near eight bridges in city
The Greater Chennai Corporation has charted out a plan for weekly clean-up of Cooum river near bridges.
According to a Chennai Corporation official, the cleaning works would be undertaken under eight bridges, tenders for which are being floated. “This initiative will be carried out under the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT). Private contractors will be appointed for the job,” the official added.
The official said that the detailed project report was prepared before finalising the schedules and added, “The contractors should remove garbage on a particular day. For instance, the contractor would clean the river near Sivananda Salai and Napier Bridge on Mondays and Link Road on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.”
The contractors would deploy their own machineries to clean the river, load and unload the garbage in Kodungaiyur and Perungudi dumping yards. It is learnt that the civic body has identified bridges near Sivananda Salai, Napier Bridge, Link Road, Island Grounds, MMC Hostel, Aminjikarai, Mehta Nagar and Choolaimedu High Road. “The eight locations are segregated into six packages. Initially, tenders are floated for Sivananda Salai package, Choolaimedu High Road and Mehta Nagar package. Tenders for remaining package will be floated soon,” the official said.
The potential contractor would carry out works for a maximum of 75 days. “The plan is to clear the garbage from the river which remained unattended for years. Further, we will control dumping into the river,” the official explained.
When asked whether the civic body has any plan to clean Adyar river, the official said that the detailed project report was under preparation, after which tenders would be invited.
