‘Free two-wheelers for disabled not registered, insured’

Shekar, a disabled person from Ekkaduthangal, was elated when he received the free two-wheeler designed for those with disabilities, in July. However, he has been fighting tooth and nail since then to get it registered and insured. He is not alone; there are many disabled persons who have been trying hard to get the paperwork sorted.

Talking to DT Next, S Namburajan, secretary, the Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled & Caregivers (TARATDAC), said, “They are supposed to get the vehicle registered before delivering it to the consumer. But they have failed to insure or get it registered. TVS won the tender with the cost including registration, but failed to do it.”

As many as 2,000 two wheelers were to be distributed among the disabled persons this year. Out of that, at least 800 have been distributed, says Namburajan. “We have written to the Disability Welfare Department highlighting the problem and want both the department and the company to take immediate steps to solve the problem,” he said.

Deputy director of the disability welfare department Ravibdranath Singh said the registration has been delayed due to technical glitches on the Transport Department website.

“We are in talks with the activists and TVS,and the transport department is attending to the problem. It will be sorted out soon and the process will be completed,” he said.
