Both of them were undergoing treatment at hospitals, but succumbed without responding to it.

The toddler, Tamilini, was a resident of Singapurumal koil near Chengalpattu and had been down with fever for a week. Her parents Tulkana (35) and Silambarasi (30) had initially admitted her to a private hospital in the area, but since the child’s condition did not improve, they shifted her to Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children in Egmore. Tamilini, however, did not respond to the treatment and died late on Sunday.

The taxi driver, Srinivasan (33), was also a resident of Singapurumal koil and had been inflicted for10 days. He had consulted doctors at Chromepet Government Hospital last week but they were unable to decipher the condition from the symptoms and referred him to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chintadripet. He was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit there when he died without responding to treatment on Sunday night.

Following the two deaths, panic spread in the neighbourhood. It took a visit from officials from Tambaram municipality to calm the residents as the hospital reports said that the patients died of viral fever and not dengue and swine flu. They, however, distributed medicines to prevent the fever from spreading.
