Man slashes ex-lover’s throat for calling off marriage, drinks poison

The accused, S Balaji, then consumed poison and confessed to the police before collapsing in the police station. The couple was rushed to hospitals and are critical, said the police.

The incident happened around 9.30 pm when the 26-year-old, V Bharathi, was at home in Rose Apartments in Gandhi Nagar with her paralysed mother while her father and brother attending a function.

Balaji visited Bharathi got into an argument with her for having called off their marriage. As the argument escalated, Balaji took a knife from the kitchen and slit Bharathi’s throat. Later, he consumed alcohol with sleeping pills and went to Tiruvottiyur police station where he collapsed. The officers gave him first-aid after which they came to know about Bharathi. The police then rushed both of them to the nearest hospitals.

During preliminary inquiry, the police found out that Balaji was an employee of an auditing firm in Kancheepuram and had met Bharathi at an automobile store three years ago where he had gone to purchase a bike. She was an employee at there.

Though Balaji claims that both families had approved of their relationship, Bharathi had allegedly backed off claiming that her family did not approve of the match.

The investigating officer told DT Next that the assault seems to be cause out of sudden provocation as Balaji claims that he went to Bharathi’s house only to talk to her. He also told the police that he was angry as Bharathi had apparently developed a relationship with another man.

The Tiruvottiyur police have booked Balaji for attempted murder and will arrest him once he recovers.

While Bharathi has been admitted to Stanley Hospital in Old Jail Road, the Balaji is undergoing treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chintadripet.
