The Secretary of Netaji Transport Workers’ Union, MV Ramamurthy, said, “We have complained several times regarding the low-quality of food served in the canteen. Soon after it, we had brought the incident to the notice of the Branch Manager. This longstanding problem resurfaced after a brief lull now.” A token-based system is being followed to avail the free meal. “The workers are given a one-rupee token who can get a noon meal in return.

The process is inflicted with numerous malpractices. The contractors tend to encash the unused tokens from the transport utility,” Ramamoorthy added.

The MTC awarded contract to a private firm after floating a tender this April. A reliable source said over 7 lakh workers across the city benefitted from the MTC canteens since the beginning of the year.

An official said, “The issue will be looked into and such incidents will be avoided in the future.”
