In a massive, surprise drive against those who trade in ganja, joint teams comprising sleuths from the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and Chennai city police swooped on a large number of spots across the city on Friday, particularly north Chennai and also suburbs, to nab peddlers and also those dealing in banned tobacco products.

On Friday, teams led by 12 deputy superintendents of police and 24 inspectors conducted searches at a number of places in the northern part of the city as well as in suburban areas, based on suspicion that some persons were carrying out ganja trade.

“The raids are still on. We may continue it in the night as well,” a senior NIB officer told this newspaper late on Friday evening. The officer refused to disclose the details about the operation, instead maintained that a clear picture would emerge only after the raids were over.

Apart from the perceived uptick in narcotics consumption among the youth in city, NIB has decided to carry out the searches particularly because November is harvesting season for ganja in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, from where most peddlers here procure the narcotic, which is then sold across the State through their trusted network of agents at a very high premium.

In Tiruchy, NIB team caught one Sathyanarayana Reddy from Andhra Pradesh after a vehicle chase and seized 170 kg of ganjafrom him.
