    Child hospital at Egmore gets advanced ICU

    Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday inaugurated a host of new facilities, including an advanced cardiac operation theatre and intensive care unit constructed at a cost of Rs 25 crore, at the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children (ICH & HC) in Egmore.

    “With the inauguration of new facilities, heart surgery can be performed even for new born children at the hospital. It is a matter of pride for Tamil Nadu as Asia’s largest hospital for children is functioning here,” said Palaniswami.


    Other facilities that were opened include an audio-visual arena (costing Rs 40 lakh) for screening cartoon and documentary movies on health, a molecular genetic laboratory (Rs 10 crore) and an arch for the advanced cardiac centre.


    Palaniswami also inaugurated a thyroid testing centre, to assist early detection of DNA and chromosomal disorders in new borns. He also released the golden jubilee commemorative stamp of UCH & HC on the occasion.


    Addressing the gathering, Palaniswami further said that under the Comprehensive Chief Minister’s Health Insurance scheme, 25,285 children with heart deformities were covered and the total cost incurred for their treatment was Rs 191 crore.


    “When the hospital was inaugurated in 1968 there were only 250 beds but now the hospital has 837 beds with all advanced facilities. 69 doctors specialising in MD (Child Health) and MD (Neonatology) graduate every year from the hospital,” said Palaniswami.


    He also said the cardiology department in the hospital is one of the renowned centres in the State, as more than 12,000 children are treated as outpatients every year. More than 250 children are treated every year by the cardiology department, which has 20 beds, the CM added.

    Outside food for EPS at Amma canteen
    Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and other ministers were spotted consuming food arranged from a private hotel at the Amma Canteen located within the hospital in Egmore. They were provided new plates and spoons. According to sources in the canteen, the food was ordered from a renowned hotel, with branches throughout the world. Patrons of the canteen, including patients, were able to gain entry only when the ministers left the place.
