Green team invites people to celebrate by planting saplings
With the onus being on an eco-friendlier Deepavali this year and moving to a more sustainable manner of celebrating this festive season, Ainthinai, the green wing of Chennai Trekking Club (CTC) have come up with an initiative to celebrate the festival in an eco-friendly way.
Chennai
They invited people across town to Akkarai on Tuesday morning for a planting and nursery maintenance drive. Ainthinai the Green wing of CTC was set up in 2012 to create a sustainable environment for the future. Nature conservation events like tree plantations and maintenance, clean ups at water bodies, organic and terrace farming, workshops on waste management and plastic free lifestyle form an integral part of Ainthinai.
“After planting saplings across the city in different areas, we set up our own nursey where we plant seeds, create seed beds and repack saplings. We plant them between June and December and take care of them from January to May,” said R Aravindh, a volunteer with the organisation. “All the seeds are only native varieties, such as pungai, neem, banyan ,and they are analysed and sown using the best of methods, after consulting experts,” he added.
“We are gathering at Akkarai at 6am, and all our volunteers will gather for a few hours to transplant seedlings to covers and prune existing saplings for better growth. It’s a chance to know and see the physical attributes of native trees. There are over 40,000 people on our CTC mailing list who are invited, and it’s open to anyone from the public as well,” said Aravindh.
“After the tropical Storm Vardah, Chennai lost most of the golden green cover. We began our mission towards recovering the lost by analysing lot of options and are working on a high-level plan. Natural calamities cannot be controlled, but to fix the loss is in our hands,” said a member of the Ainthinai team.
