Diffabled-friendly measures in buses: IRT calls for ideas

The problem of inaccessibility for persons with disabilities in public transport persists though activists had been flagging the issue for years. In the wake of this, the Institute of Road Transport (IRT) has now taken the initiative to bring about changes in public transport buses with a creative thinking competition it plans to organise.

The institute has called on individuals, teams as well as institutions to suggest a prototype that could provide the State transport with ideas for a model bus offering easy access for those with disabilities. Inviting suggestions from the public, colleges and NGOs, M Gajendran, Director of the Institute, said, “We are calling for ideas to find a solution to retrofit existing buses to make them disabled-friendly.”

Stating that the competition is open to all, he said, “A committee will be formed which will select the best idea from the participants. They will eventually narrow it down to one best idea and the winner or the winning team will get one-year free travel within the district or destinations of any State transport corporation bus to a maximum of three members in a team, besides a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.”

The shortlisted teams should be willing to travel to Chennai to demonstratethe model.
