Chennai, among many other cities, is expected to get a second airport and discussions are being held with the State government on the same, said Guruprasad Mohapatra, Chairman, Airport Authority of India, during his visit to Tamil Nadu.

“The Chennai airport, like the case in many other cities, will soon not be able to accommodate more flights. Hence, we are holding talks with the state government, requesting them to identify a couple of plots where we can build a second airport,” he said.

Besides, he said that a Rs 2,100 crore major project that was initiated at the Chennai airport to integrate the middle part of the airport - the old part of the terminal building, to merge it in a state-of-the art new building with the other two flanks – is expected to take around 42 months to complete. “We are hoping it will be completed sooner,” he added

The official, who is in the state to review the airports, said, “Besides, on October 17, we had a small but important occasion, wherein, we planted a record number of Ayurvedic plants in all our airports in the Southern region - an initiative of the Regional Airport Executive Director here.”

On the terrible condition of traffic due to the project work, he said, “It is challenging for both passengers as well as for the administrators who oversee the airport. The best that can be done is to coordinate with the state police and see how more orderly traffic movement can take place.” He added work is being done in coordination with the traffic police for rerouting.
