The Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) arrested two persons for allegedly creating a fake FIR copy for a road accident case to claim compensation from an insurance firm. They also suspect a possible lawyer-middlemen nexus in insurance cases and launched hunt for more suspects.

The accused Stephan, a clerk for a senior advocate in the Madras High Court from Pammal, and Mohan, a BBA graduate, were arrested and remanded in judicial custody for creating a fake FIR with a specific font used by the Police Department.

The duo had scanned each letter from two FIR copies to create a fabricated one as the font is not available in the public domain, said CB-CID sources.

After a private insurance firm petitioned the Madras High Court a few months ago stating that they have received a fake FIR in connection with a fatal accident, an CB-CID inquiry was ordered under the supervision of Superintendent Praveenkumar Abhinav. His team investigated the case and arrested the duo.

Sources in CB-CID said that a retired army personnel died in an accident caused by an unknown vehicle in 2017. Following this, Stephan and Mohan approached the deceased’s kin and received the FIR copy on the promise of getting them compensation.

“As insurance cannot be claimed for accidents caused by unidentified vehicles, they added the particulars of another vehicle which met with an accident a few months ago in Chromepet and filed motor claims original petitions in different courts for compensation. However, the insurance firm found out that the faulty vehicle had not been released for use in the period when the second accident took place and filed a petition in the court,” said the CB-CID source.

The duo is suspected to have been creating fake FIR copies for the last three years. The CB-CID sleuths have launched a hunt to nab other suspects.
