Complaints galore, but only four buses seized for overcharging
Despite overwhelming complaints from passengers regarding collection of excess fare during the festival season, the Transport Department has seized only four omni buses during this Navratri. The vehicles have been detained under the Motor Vehicle Act Section 192 (Breach of Permit Conditions).

According to the official data, a total of 12,831 vehicles were checked across the State including 1,757 vehicles in the city between October 17 and 22. The four vehicles that were seized are registered in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry and Karnataka.
A top official said, “The vehicles were booked for the misuse of permits by demanding abnormal fare from the passengers.”
Transport Commissioner C Samayamoorthy said, “The department has no provision to fix fare for the omni buses. The action was taken against the violators based on the revised tariff submitted by the omni bus owners to the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court.”
Officials said the Transport Department received 864 complaints since January, in which action was taken on six complaints that were filed with complete information about the incident and violation.
