The Controller, Mani, reportedly manipulated bookkeeping by maintaining a balance sheet for the permanent employees while he assigned the actual work to the contract employees.

According to the mandate, the money for working in the first shifts are directly credited to the employees’ bank account and pay slips are awarded for the same. In addition, there is a provision of working in the second shift when a shortage of staff arises. Then, the controllers of each depot are eligible to call the crew to work in the second shift. Upon completion, the salary of the second shift is awarded in person.

In the recent case, the controller assigned the second shifts to contract employees who draw the salary on a pay scale of Rs 430 per shift. But the controller falsely depicted the work as being done by the seniors with a high pay scale. They draw a salary of Rs 1,300 per shift. Later, he siphoned off the difference of amount. This came to light when a few workers reported the same to the top officials, a source said.

A top official attached to the MTC said that Mani was suspended after his involvement in misappropriation of funds.
