The average lifespan of a medium to large breed dogs is around 10-12 years, while it varies for smaller breeds and cats.

Watching your beloved pet enter old age can be very tough and heart-wrenching — however, while the pet is just one part of your life, you are the pet’s everything. They require utmost care and support as they near their end so abandoning an aged or ailing dog/cat is never the right option.

Instead, follow these simple tips as recommended by experts, to ensure your family and furry friend’s comfort during the last stages of its life.

    Diet

The energy levels and requirements of a senior pet are different from that of an adult or puppy/kitten. Consult with your veterinarian about how to suitably alter the food you give your pet.

Many off-the-shelf ready-made food brands have special kibble for seniors; if you feed him/her only home-cooked food, you could add or  remove some ingredients or quantity.

    Health care and supplements

Larger animals are easily prone to health issues such as arthiritis or may suffer from loss of sight or hearing. You might be required to give it supplements in the form of syrups or tablets. Also, if your vet recommends it, it would be helpful to get periodic blood tests for geriatric animals.

    Exercise

It’s a myth that seniors do not require any form of exercise. If your pet is active, you can take him/her on walks or let them play outdoors. The duration and intensity of exercise may have to be reduced depending on the physical capability and age of the pet. For example, pets with exercise intolerance must not be given too much of physical activity for the causes could be cardiac-related.

    Grooming

Dental hygiene and regular grooming are vital. Brushing your dog or cat at least once a day thoroughly will help you spend time with your pet and maintain the coat in a good condition. Using a tooth brush and paste meant for pets, you could gently brush its teeth to reduce tartar and foul odour.

    Moral support

Your pet can sense its end before you can. Many animals tend to wander off to an isolated and quiet place to rest during their final moments but if your pet is at home or in the hospital, ensure you stay by its side. Speaking in a reassuring tone and saying, “Good boy/girl,” could help ease its passing.
