This artist is one of a few women to make 51 paintings on same theme

In conversation with the artist, she told us, “Everyone has many associations with a flower — some touch it, others smell or adorn their hair with it. But how often does someone stop only to admire its beauty? I think I am one of the few lucky ones to do so and through my art, I wanted to capture the beauty of these flowers.”

Apart from the unique theme, one got to notice how the style of painting was also unusual. She explained, “My paintings are done without using brushes. The technique used is known as impasto, which was followed by Vincent van Gogh. It is one-of-a-kind because the paint creates a three-dimensional effect as if the flowers and colours were protruding from the canvas.” To create this visual spectacle, she used only paint tubes, knives, her fingers and sticks. “A couple of the line drawings you see here have even been requested by galleries across India for them to display because it’s a rare technique,” she added.

Through this show, Kavipriya went on to become one of the city’s few solo women artists to create 51 pieces based one common theme, thus setting a personal record. It’s quite inspiring, considering she’s her family’s first artist. “I come from a family of doctors and engineers but my dad wanted me to pursue arts. I don’t think I’ve ever spent a summer holiday without going for an art class,” she laughed.

She took up arts as an education and profession later on, and currently serves as the Head of Department for Arts and Crafts at National Public School. She put up this exhibition after a five-year hiatus. “Ultimately, I feel that everyone should have a painting at home. When people look at the walls in their home, they should feel relaxed and that’s what I want to convey through my paintings,” she concluded.
