Stating that fungal infections are commonly caused by Dermatophytosis (a type of fungus which affinities to skin, hair and nail), Dr U R Dhanalakshmi, Director and professor, Institute of Dermatology, at RGGGH, said, “It is common due to heat, sweating and the loss of immunity, besides close contact and sharing of personal belongings.”

Nowadays, over the counter medications containing irrational combinations of steroid and antimicrobials has led to the rise of resistant fungal infections. “It is therefore very important to maintain personal hygiene and use clean, loose fitting and dry clothes,” she stressed.

In the case of Psoriasis, she said, “Red patches of skin with increased scaling will be present at specific parts on the body. In fact, at times, even the scalp or joints may get affected. The cause of the disease is multifactorial, but sometimes it may run in the family.” While the disease is not curable, it can be controlled, she said. “It is not age restricted. There are a variety of treatment modalities now, including ointments, creams, lotions and tablets. It is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and follow a healthy diet,” the doctor added.
