    Child run over by tanker lorry in Villivakkam

    A one-and-a-half year-old boy was killed after a tanker lorry hit him when he was playing near his house in Villivakkam on Monday night. Police identified the victim as Mohit, son of Kalaivannan.

    A one-and-a-half year-old boy was killed after a tanker lorry hit him when he was playing near his house in Villivakkam on Monday night. Police identified the victim as Mohit, son of Kalaivannan.

    The incident took place around 8 pm on North Jagannatha Nagar Third Street in Villivakkam. Neighbours rushed Mohit to a nearby hospital but he was declared brought dead by a medical team there. Immediatelyafter the accident, the driver abandoned the vehicle(TN 18 AK 6854) and fled the spot fearing for his life, said police sources.

    The lorry was later seized by the Tirumangalam traffic investigation wing police. Police said that they had identified the owner of the water tanker and added that he will be nabbed soon. The lorry is reportedly engagedby the Metro Water on contract basis.

    After the kin and neighbours of the child staged a protest, tensionprevailed in the locality and police personnel were deployed to avoid anyuntoward incidents, said sources in city police.

    Two-and-a-half year old run over by school bus

    Ariyalur: A two-and-a-half-year-old boy was run over by a school van on Monday, when the baby along with the mother stepped out to sendoff his brother to school in Ariyalur.

    Sources said that Kalaiselvi (26) of Sozholankudikkadu village near Sendurai in Ariyalur district along with her second child Nitish had come to board her elder son Naveen, a Class 2 student, in the school bus. After Naveen boarded the school bus, the driver who did not notice Nitish playing nearby, moved the bus and ran over the infant.

    On information from locals about the death of the baby boy, the Guvagam police came to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Jeyankondam Government Hospital for autopsy. Selvam, the driver of the school bus and a resident of Nakhambadi, was taken in custody for inquiry.

    Newborn rescued: A newborn girl, who was found abandoned among the bushes, was rescued in Tiruvaiyaru on Sunday evening. Later, the child was handed over to the child line officials. According to sources, a newborn girl, around 10 days old, was found abandoned near panchayat union office on Sunday.

    Vasantha, a passer-by, who heard the cries of the infant, rescued the girl and took her home. However, she informed the All-Women Police Station in Tiruvaiyaru and then the child was handed over to the childline officials, who then brought the child to the Government Raja Mirasdar Hospital in Thanjavur. Later, the baby was admitted under the cradle baby scheme.
