Chased by drunk duo for gutkha, man mowed down by bus
An unidentified man came under the wheels of an MTC bus after he was chased by two drunk men who demanded gutkha from him, on Poonamallee High Road. Though the incident happened around 5 pm on Sunday near the Sudha Hotel in Egmore when the victim was walking towards Chennai Central, it was reported only on Monday.

Anna Square traffic investigation police said the accused, auto driver M Devan (30) of Dr Santhosh Nagar and mechanic V Kamal alias Madurai Muthu of the same locality, intercepted the pedestrian under the influence of alcohol and demanded gutkha, a banned tobacco product, from him. When the victim avoided them, they chased and attacked him.
The panicked man tried to run away but slipped from the pavement and fell on the road. An MTC bus proceeding towards Koyambedu ran over and dragged him for about 10 metres before coming to a halt.
K Easwaran (38) of Madurai who was driving the bus did not notice the man.
Passers-by rushed the victim to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital where he was declared brought dead. A case has been registered and the duo was arrested after verifying CCTV footage retrieved from the spot.
