Woman staged beach robbery with lover to kill husband

The accused, Anitha, was arrested after an interrogation while her boyfriend Antony Jagan was traced to Madurai and nabbed based on her inputs. Anitha’s husband, Kathiresan, continues to remain critical at Malar Hospital in Adyar.

Police sources said that Antony Jagan of Thoothukudi was a post-graduate student. Antony and Anitha, who got to know each other while travelling to their respective colleges on the same bus, were in love. However, Anitha’s parents opposed their relationship. She succumbed to parental pressure and married Kathiresan, a software engineer from Zameen Pallavaram. It has only been a month since they got married, said police.

Anitha, who was in touch with Antony Jagan after marriage, hatched a plan along with him to kill Kathiresan. They also decided to make it look like a robbery to escape the police.

As per the plan, Anitha asked Kathiresan to take her to Tiruvanmiyur beach on Saturday and the latter obliged. While they were in a deserted place, she told him that she wanted to play hide-and-seek and tied his eyes with a piece of cloth. Meanwhile, Antony Jagan who was hiding in the locality confronted Kathiresan and hit him with an iron rod. While Kathiresan fell unconscious, Anitha handed over her jewels to Antony Jagan after which he escaped. Anitha then informed the police that Kathiresan was attacked by unidentified duo, who robbed her jewels.

The police grew suspicious of Anitha as she did not cooperate for the inquiry and gave contradictory replies. When grilled further, she confessed to the crime and Antony Jagan was traced to Madurai based on her inputs.  Police have remanded both of them. The incident has shocked the kin and neighbours of Kathiresan.
