Police in Kancheepuram are searching for a woman who abandoned a five-day-old boy at the Kancheepuram bus stand on Monday. The woman requested a nurse, who was waiting at the bus stand, to take care of the child while she attended nature’s call. However, she never returned, leaving the infant with the nurse.

Police said Gajalakshmi (45), a nurse and a resident of Chinna Kancheepuram, was waiting at the bus stand when a woman, believed to be in her early 30s, approached her around 7 pm. She was holding the child in her hand. The woman told Gajalakshmi that she needed to use the toilet, and sought the latter’s help to take care of the baby for a few minutes. Gajalakshmi agreed to take care of the child as the woman went inside the washroom.
As the woman failed to return even after an hour, Gajalakshmi sought help from other passengers and asked them to check inside the washroom. But the woman could not be found inside the washroom. Gajalakshmi and other passengers searched the bus stand for a while after which an announcement was also made using the public address system. As the woman failed to turn up, Gajalakshmi suspected if she had intentionally abandoned the baby.
Around 9 pm, Gajalakshmi along with a few other passengers visited the Siva Kanchi police station, narrated the incident and handed over the child to the police. The police have registered a case and later the child was taken to the Kancheepuram GH. The doctors said that the boy, estimated to be only about five days old, was healthy after a check-up. The Siva Kanchi police are trying to trace the woman who abandoned the child.
