Dogged devotion: Cops adopt offender’s pet

A week ago, humanity put its best foot forward when the officers of S 10 Pallikaranai Police Station decided to adopt an accused person’s pet Labrador Retriever. Dawn Williams, the General Manager of Blue Cross of India, recalls details of the incident.

He received a call from one of the police offers, who said that they had picked up the dog from a village near Kancheepuram. “I was told that they had had an arrest warrant to pick up a man from there but as they sat him in the jeep and left, they saw a dog following them. They kept driving but when the dog didn’t cease to follow, they stopped and he immediately jumped onto the jeep,” said Dawn. Not wanting to leave the pet behind, the cops took it to the station.

“Just because the owner turned out to be a criminal, it’s no fault of the pet’s, the cops felt. So they decided to adopt it. The Inspector informed me to reach the police station and upon meeting the dog, I knew it had been neglected by the accused because it was dirty and malnourished,” he added.

‘Pandi’ as they named him, was then taken to BCI, given a “nice oil massage and shower” and dropped back at the station. Today, he sits at the entrance and greets all the officers and visitors, earning pats in return. Dawn said, “At their own expense, they buy the dog biriyani and other food items and look after him really well.

It’s a rare but amazing case of a dog’s loyalty to its owner and the humane side of police officials coming to the fore. I always think if we humans have something to teach animals, but they teach me a lesson everyday.”
