The incident happened in the wee hours of Tuesday, when constable Ilangovan entered a private hospital on CDN Nagar. He was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. When the hospital staff tried to stop him, Ilangovan became furious and got into an argument with them.
Hearing the commotion, Dr Fathima Hasan, a professor at Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital who runs the private hospital, came to the reception area. When the staff there apprised her about what had happened, she tried to get Ilangovan out of hospital premises.
However, Ilangovan refused to leave, and instead he allegedly hurled abuses at the doctor and even tried to attack her. The staff informed the police control room immediately, who in turn alerted a police patrol team who rushed to the spot and took Ilangovan away. Based on Dr Hassan’s complaint, Koyamebdu police registered a case and conducted an inquiry, after which Ilangovan was suspended.
Man held for tearing cop’s uniform
In another incident, a lorry driver was arrested for allegedly breaking a walkie-talkie and tearing the uniform of a police officer in Madhavaram. The accused, Sathishkumar, was in an inebriated condition, police said. The incident took place when constable Manoharan went to Sathishkumar’s house at Shanmugam Nagar to settle a family dispute.
As Sathishkumar often quarrelled with neighbours under the influence of alcohol, his father Gajendran alerted the Police Control Room on Wednesday night. When constable Manoharan visited his house, Sathishkumar got into an argument with Manoharan.
The accused snatched the walkie-talkie from the policeman and broke it, and also allegedly tried to tear Manoharan’s uniform. Based on the latter’s complaint, Sathishkumar was arrested on the charges of preventing a government official from performing his duty. He was remanded in judicial custody.
