Residents on Second Street of Puduvai Nagar in Chromepet claimed that the overflowing sewage in their locality was not fixed for nearly seven months despite addressing the issue to the municipality officials.

Stating that the sewage water that leaked from an opening on the road flowed directly into the metro water junction box on the same street. “Following this, the drinking water was also contaminated and we stopped using that water for our household purposes,” said a resident of Puduvai Nagar.

Members of the Chromepet Puduvai Thiru Vanigargal Sangam, who decided to ensure action on the problem, said that the odour that emanates from the sewage pit was unbearable.

“Our children are forced to inhale unhealthy air and they end up falling sick often. We have filed a number of complaint, however the officials have not come up with a permanent solution,” said an office bearer of the sangam.

An official from the Pallavaram Munipality ME Karupaiyah Raja said that they were aware of issue and were working on it.

“The main reason for the sewage leak is the narrow pipeline. We are trying to replace them with broader pipes and work on the same will commence soon,” Karupaiyah Raja said. He also added that metro water supply was not affected due to the leak in the drains.
