The deceased, Girirajan, was a resident of Keluthipet near Kundrathur. He had served as the ward councillor twice. He was married and had two girl children, said police.

Around 3 pm on Sunday, Girirajan was found dead in a pool of blood with several injuries all over body at Anjugam Nagar. Shocked, passers-by rushed him to the Chromepet Government Hospital, however, he was declared dead on arrival. On information, the Kundrathur police registered a case.

After the preliminary inquiry, police said that Girirajan could have been murdered for helping his brother-in-law Mohan’s love affair. Mohan and a girl from the neighbourhood were in love. However, the girl’s father Babu did not approve of their relationship even though they were from the same community. Against Babu’s wishes, Girirajan solemnised the couple’s wedding seven months ago.

When Girirajan recently approached Babu and requested to accept the couple, the latter reportedly refused and warned him of dire consequences.

When Girirajan was at a family function on Sunday, Babu called him over phone and asked him to come to Anjugam Nagar on the pretext of compromising about his daughter’s wedding. When he went to the spot, Babu along with three other persons hacked Girirajan multiple times, killing him on the spot.

After the news spread, Girirajan’s relatives went to Babu’s house on Gandhi Salai in Kundrathur and set it on fire. TNFRS personnel from Kundrathur fire station rushed to the spot and put out the fire. Meanwhile, the Kundrathur police have picked up four suspects, including Babu, and are interrogating them.
