Kerala police resort to fire in the air to arrest financier

A city-based financier, who escaped from Kerala police amid high drama with a help of 30-member gang in Coimbatore two months ago, was nabbed in Virugambakkam on Saturday in connection with several other cheating cases. But the Saturday arrest was no less dramatic than the July incident, as Kerala police had to fire in the air to deter accused Maharajan’s relatives , supporters before securing him

The incident took place around 12.30 pm, when a team of police personnel led by an inspector from Kochi reached his house on the First Main Road in Natesan Nagar. When he tried to escape from the house, police chased and nabbed him. But his relatives and supporters gathered in large numbers and prevented police from taking him in their vehicle.

As the crowd mobbed the police and was about to overpower them, the inspector fired in the air to disperse them. The police also lodged a complaint at the Virgambakkam police station against those who prevented them from performing their duty and produced Maharajan before the magistrate. He will be taken to Kochi after obtaining a transit warrant, said the Virugambakkam police.

A native of Tirunelveli, Maharajan had cheated several people of crores of rupees by acting as a middleman and has cases against him in his hometown, Coimbatore and Kochi, said police. After police registered cases against him in these towns, he escaped to Chennai with his family and led a normal life. Since he did not have any cases against him in the city, he moved around freely.

In July, Kochi police arrested him in Sriperumpudur. But a 30-member gang intercepted the police vehicles in Coimbatore and set him free. Maharajan, who was hiding elsewhere for a while, returned to Chennai recently. This is the second time Kerala police visited the city to arrest him after he escaped in Coimbatore. He was not present at his house the last time they came.
