    University of Madras to hold Senate, Academic Council elections on September 29

    The University of Madras will be conducting elections on September 29 to elect three members to the Senate and one member to the standing committee of the Academic Council for the University.

    A notification was issued in the Tamil Nadu government gazette in this regard. The tenure of the existing members will get be over by the end of this month. The new members will hold office for one year to take vital decisions of the university.

    “It is hereby notified that the elections to the Senate and the standing committee of the Academic Council will be held under section 14-1(a) and Section 24(K) of the Madras University Act 1923,” the government gazette said.

    The newly elected Senate member will hold office from September 29, 2018 to September 28, 2019. Similarly, the elected members will assume office on the same day.

    The members, who will be nominated for the standing committee of the Academic Council, should be a principal or a teacher of any affiliated colleges. However, there is no specific qualification for the members nominated to the post of Senate in the university.

    This March, the university elected six members to the syndicate and two members to the Academic Council, based on the recommendations by Senate members who are not engaged in teaching.

    Accordingly, the election was conducted on the same day of the annual meeting of the Senate, which was on held on March 31, 2018. The tenure of these members extend till March 30, 2021.

    Madras University sources told DT NEXT on Thursday that soon after electing the new members in the upcoming elections, the vacancies of Dean, College Development Council, Director, University Student’s Advisory Bureau and Co-ordinator, National Service Scheme will be filled according to the norms.

    In addition, the vacancies for the post of University Research Fellowship in the department of Central Instrumentation and service laboratory will also be filled during the same period.
