Their upcoming event titled The Nonsense Camp spans over five days and the initiative’s Learning Experience Head, Harish Srinivasan, shares details. “Since we were in our final year of college, we wondered why practical learning was and is always neglected in most schools. When we started visiting schools, we found that the kids didn’t have enough exposure so we came up with a few modules to teach certain subjects practically,” he begins. For example, they have a product called Dexter’s Box that brings about a culture shift of learning science from ‘confusing’ to fun.

“We implement a similar ideology at the camp, by giving children the freedom to explore and conduct any experiments they want. There are no rules and gadgets to fiddle with so they get to play with different materials. At the end of five days, we give the parents a profile about which areas their child is interested in,” says Harish.

In the upcoming second edition, topics they’ll be covering include magic with electronics, DIY musical instruments, making sculptures using cement and plaster of Paris, playing traditional games like pallanguzhi from various countries, etc. He adds, “On the final day, the kids will present a show-and-tell of what they’ve created and learnt, after which we’ll be bringing parents who have home-schooled their children to initiate a conversation with other attendees.” Their intention is to get answers for FAQs on alternative styles of education, “And address judgements that parents make for or against certain streams of education,” he says.
