Work on Kilambakkam bus terminus likely to start in November
The proposed bus terminus in Kilambakkam, envisaged to reduce congestion at the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) in Koyambedu, will soon be a reality as the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) hopes to start the construction work in November and finish the same within two years.

The project, first announced seven years ago, was marred by several issues like land acquisition, frequent modification of DPR and an unforeseen objection from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as an archaeological site is located nearby.
CMDA officials said a tender was floated last month and the bids would be finalised the coming week.
“In the pre-bid meeting conducted a few days ago, five firms participated. However, the actual number of bidders may increase. The work order will be issued within a month to the qualified bidder and the work will commence in the first week of November,” an official told DTNext.
All south-bound buses will be run from the Kilambakkam bus terminus situated near Vandalur.
According to the official, the terminus, estimated to cost Rs 309 crore, would come up across 88.52 acres of land and the built-up area would cover more than 44 acres off the GST Road.
“The structure of the new terminus will be much like the CMBT except it will have car and bike parking on the ground floor. A separate stand for MTC buses will be provided,” the official added.
It will have separate parking space for government and private omnibuses with 165 and 85 bus bays respectively.
While it is learnt that the ASI is yet to accord clearance for the project, the CMDA official said, “We will not carry out the construction work at the restricted site. The concrete structure will come at least 100 meters away from the site, where construction is allowed.”
He, however, expressed confidence that the ASI would soon give its clearance for the project.
