On the 140th birth anniversary of Periyar, a pair of shoes was thrown at one of the statues of the rebel leader.
Various political personalities and celebrities have paid tribute to Periyar on his birthday.
When members of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi were paying tributes to a Periyar statue in Simpson, a motorcyclist threw his shoes at the statue.
Following the incident, DMk party members and Vidudhalai Chiruthaigal party members conducted a protest.
Police have reportedly assured to take immediate action against the accused and passified the protesters.
Leaders from all major parties of Tamil Nadu have paid tribute to the rebel leader on his birth anniversary by visiting the statues of Periyar.
