Rights of movies stolen, wife of Saravana Films owner complaints
Shocked to learn that the rights of a dozen and a half films that her family banner had produced were fraudulently appropriated by a group of people, Shanthi Saravanan, wife of the late Saravanan of Saravana Films, which produced many popular movies starring MG Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Saroja Devi and J Jayalalithaa, on Monday approached the city police seeking action.
Chennai
Speaking to the media after lodging the complaint at the City Police Commissioner’s office on Monday, Shanthi said she came to know that the rights of 18 movies, including a Hindi film, were fraudulently taken by a group of men by creating fake documents two years after her husband Saravanan died.
The films include Padakotti, Kudiyiruntha Koil, Paalum Pazhamum, Paadha Kaanikai, Rajkumar (Hindi), etc.
According to Shanthi, she came to know about the fraud when she tried to sell the rights of these films to P Dakhinamoorthy of Bravo Entertainments. Losing rights over these films that her family firm had produced, which include some of the popular titles from yesteryear, caused huge financial loss to her, she said in the complaint.
“Those who had fraudulently acquired the rights had sent a legal notice to a music company for rights violation. The music company had alerted Shanthi about it. We came to know about the fraud after we finalised the deal,” Dakshinamoorthy said when this newspaper contacted him.
“MGR used to treat me like his daughter,” Shanthi told reporters outside police commissionerate on Monday.
