Kovalam, Mahabs the new hotspots of Gen Y festivals

It’s no secret that Chennaiites have fiercely coveted the Marina and Edward Elliot beaches as two of their most favourite spots for decades. However, over the last year, there has been a gradual trend emerging, with many of the more interesting festivals and events that appeal to the Gen Y situated well towards the outskirts of the city with Kovalam and Mahabalipuram emerging as prime contenders.

Away from the hustle-bustle of the city life, most teens and college students have begun to prefer taking a quick drive and spending the evening at these ‘destination fests’.

The reasons are many. National surfer and stand-up paddler Vilassini Sundar says one reason is that these destination beaches are far cleaner than Marina or Bessy.

“Not to mention, we take efforts to involve ourselves in beach clean-ups, and keep the atmosphere pleasant. Another advantage is that the local villagers there are very well-behaved as they are used to tourists. Foreigners and girls feel very safe. When surfers from abroad visit, they get gawked at uncomfortably or asked for pictures at the beaches within the city,” she says, adding,

“The Covelong Point Surf, Music and Yoga fest really put us on the map and attract people from across the globe. There are smaller surfing events being organised as well.”

Resorts in Mahabalipuram also ensure that organisers don’t have to wreck their plans dealing with authorities to get permission, and concerts can go on well into the night.

The ‘One People’ festival held last weekend organised by musician Bjorn Surrao and DJ Prashanth Amir was a hit, as it promoted the local music and independent art talent in the city. Masiha Shabeer, one of the organisers, says, “It was a great opportunity to give space to local bands, DJs, and so on. We kept it eco-friendly too.”
