Doctors plan strike on September 21 as government fails to revise pay

The Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Joint Action Committee called for a one-day strike on September 21 across Tamil Nadu. The decision comes almost 60 days after they issued a notice to the State Government seeking to revise the pay scale of doctors in the State on a par with Dynamic Assured Career Progression (DACP) Scheme implemented by the Central Government.

Doctors Association for Social Equality and Tamil Nadu Medical Students Association addressed a joint press meet on Saturday announcing the strike. Dr GR Ravindranath, secretary, DASE, said, “The government is squarely to be blamed for the inconvenience the strike is going to cause to the patients and public. It is happening due to their inaction. They are also making attempts to curb the strike and that is anti-democratic.”

Dr Ravindranath added that the government also attempted to reduce the number of professors and assistant professors through a Government Order (GO) issued recently, while they should be making moves to improve the ratios of beds to population and doctors to patients.

Another bone of contention is the break system that delays the chances of a final year MBBS who has failed papers to secure internship on time, as they can take up the exam again only after six months. “They should conduct the exams within a month so that they can go for internships. In BDS courses, the exams are conducted within a month.” Their other demands, include payment of stipend for house surgeons and PG students.

There are nearly 20,0000 doctors as part of the several associations covered by the joint action committee.
