Challenging conventional perspectives on art
She is a popular art curator and is well-connected with the contemporary art scene in Chennai. After working in the contemporary art circuit, artist CP Krishnapriya has decided to take art to various sections of people and challenge the traditional outlook of art.

“We have a lot of conventional perspectives on art. Many think that art can be enjoyed only by a particular class of people, but this ideology is completely wrong. What I am trying to do is look at art within a social space and how it can be embraced by everyone. A bunch of artists are working towards to make this a meaningful exercise,” she says.
Popularly, art is seen as something that can beautify a subject or something that is pleasant. But people from different parts of the world are challenging this idea and are constantly trying to break this cliché. “My work is primarily based on this concept. Rather than viewing art as something that makes you feel good, I wanted art to make you think about your immediate world and environment,” adds Krishnapriya.
She had curated an exhibition on ‘Archiving Labour’ by the students of Government College of Fine Arts. Most of the students come from families that are involved in hard labour. “The exhibition’s aim was to identify different perspective of labour. The students studied their own families and the way they’re connected with the work. By curating this exhibition, I understood that ‘labour’ is not a subject that makes people comfortable and no art aficionado can relate to this. This is what we are trying to break,” she remarks.
