Finish works before monsoon: Mudichur residents
Once considered a model village panchayat, Mudichur in the southern suburbs is now crying for attention with bad roads, absence of storm water drains and uncooperative officials.
Chennai
Mudichur village panchayat that comprises of 12 wards, was one of the best village panchayats until a few years ago and even received awards from Prime Minister and President for its citizen-friendly initatives.
Things turned opposite after the 2015 December floods as Mudichur was one of the most affected area in the suburbs. The people on the ground floor lost their valuables and those residing on the second floor remained indoors for a week.
The residents here claimed that the neighbourhood has not returned to normalcy until now as the officials were not taking any action. To highlight their point, residents claimed that of the nine parks in their locality that were damaged by the floods, only two have been functional even after two years. “And even the roads which got damaged during the floods has not be repaired yet. Not even a single road had been repaired till now,” said a fuming local.
During a recent village council meeting, the residents contended with the officials to take action soon, as the monsoon season is nearing.
They asked the officials to build a huge concrete wall in the Adyar river bed as built in Saidapet. Also, they have demanded officials to upgrade the panchayat to town panchayat to facilitate more funds from the government.
Andrew Samuel, a resident of Mudichur said, “ We once felt proud to be a part of Mudichur Panchayat. But now we are planning to shift our house”.
When contacted, St Thomas Mount Block Development Officer (BDO) Venkat Ragavan said, “We have received funds from the government and efforts are on to develop Mudichur.
We have also planned to increase the depth of the Adayar river by 5-feet so that the water will not come out. All the work will be completed before the Monsoon” he said.
