The announcement was made following request from owners living outside the city.

Heeding to the request by property owners living outside the city, the civic body has decided to extend the last day by 16 days, announced Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan on Friday. The initial deadline for self-declaration was set on August 31.

“There is a 15-day period to appeal to the officials, in case a property owner thinks that the measurement of the building is incorrect. The public will be given enough time to appeal, until they are satisfied,” said a senior official.

The State government had passed the order to revise property tax by not more than 100 per cent for commercial buildings and not more than 50 per cent for rented residential and owned residential buildings. In Chennai Corporation, the move to revise this tax is coming after 20 years.

Following this order, the Greater Chennai Corporation is all set to review the taxation criteria in the area under its jurisdiction. All property owners have been asked to file a self-declaration form, which would collect details of the property, including built-up area, total extent of land, portions which are given out on rent, and other such information.

The form has to be submitted by either uploading it on Corporation’s website or submitting it at the counters at zonal or ward offices. The basic street rate will be fixed based on guideline value of the property, monthly rental value and area of the building, among other factors. Following this, an assessment would be carried out for revision of the property tax.
