From improving the livelihood prospects of students, particularly girls, to help boost their confidence, the Pudumai Palli Project, which has now come to an end after three years, has played a role in encouraging the students to stay in school.

The ‘Pudumai Palli Project: Developing Innovative Schools in Chennai (P3DISC)’ was implemented in over 70 corporation schools by the British Council in partnership with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). Funded by the MacArthur Foundation, it was initiated in 2015.

Stating that over 51,000 students and 140 teachers from 70 Corporation High and Higher Secondary schools were benefitted by this, a GCC official said, “Student clubs were formed through which they got involved in social initiatives. Each club had four student leaders, mostly girls. It worked towards boosting their confidence in terms of their leadership skills and skills, including English language.”

As most students come from poor economic backgrounds, staying back in schools has not been very certain for them. “Each student has her own share of problems to face within their homes. There was nothing that could stop them from dropping out. However, this project has helped them gain great confidence in themselves. They are now able to think out of the box, and speak with great confidence,” said Dr Antonius Raghubansie – Director (Acting) – British Council, South India.

Some of the teachers admitted to being clueless in the beginning. “We were worried that it may not even work out. However, we are in awe of how much our kids have benefitted from this. They used to be hesitant to speak or take up any initiative earlier. However, now, they are extremely confident,” said Jeni Clase Antonio, a school teacher.
