30 per cent rise in number of Lasik surgeries in Chennai

Ophthalmologists in the city claim that there has been a 30 per cent rise in the number of Lasik and smile Lasik surgeries. Increased cases of poor eyesight and the demand for employees to refrain from wearing glasses are a few reasons why the number of these surgeries being performed in the state are on the rise.

Stating that there is no screaming data to prove that there is a rise in the number, Dr Ravindra Mohan, ophthalmologist, Gleneagles Global Hospital, said, “However, more cases of refractive errors are being picked up today. Due to this higher pickup rate, a larger number of people come forward for the surgeries.”

Besides, he said, “There are lots of jobs that require their employees to avoid wearing glasses. Be it a receptionist, or a news anchor, glasses are a strict no. As a result, many come forward for the laser surgery.”

With the two main aspects to the surgery being effectiveness and safety, he said, “Earlier, it was not considered safe. However, complications are extremely rare today. Doctors are able to recommend it more confidently now.”

As Smile is an even more advanced form of laser surgery, it has been picking up drastically. “The overuse of technology and the lack of the right kind of food has resulted in many suffering with poor eyesight. With the laser surgery serving as a permanent solution, it has been the best option for many,” said Dr K Shoba, an eye specialist, adding, “Though there is no official data, we have been seeing a 30 per cent increase in the cases coming forward for the surgery.

While lenses had, until recently, been the best option, many fear the possibility of developing infections over time. “Putting a foreign body into your eye every day may not be very feasible. Someday, if the contact lens gets infected, your eye can also get infected. As a result, many come forward for the surgery once they cross 18,” said Dr Amar Agarwal, Managing Director of Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital and Eye Research Centre.
