The ‘Statement of Intent’ was jointly signed by  Health Minister C Vijaya Bhaskar, who along with a team of officials is currently on an official visit to Australia, and Jill Hennessy, Health Minister of Victoria.

Both the parties agreed on an organisational setup for accident care and treatment, maintaining a State-level registry of accidents, improving the standard of treatment for accidents and to undertake research for emergency care treatments.

After signing the ‘Statement of Intent’, Vijaya Bhaskar said that the health care provided in Tamil Nadu is the best in India. The prime objective of the Australian delegation’s visit is to improve the emergency care provided in the State.

“Alfred Hospital in Victoria is renowned for its accident care and research. The visit has helped us to gain first-hand experience of the system. The experience gained in the visit will help us in improving the emergency treatment and providing treatment for accident victims,” said Vijaya Bhaskar. He also said that in the first six months of cooperative work between the Victoria government and the TN Health department, the death rate due to accidents had reduced from 8.3 to 5.6 percentage in Madras Medical College Hospital due to TAEI.

“The response time for 108 ambulance service too has reduced to 8 minutes and 36 seconds. It is one of the key achievements of the State government,” said the Health Minister.
