Illegal sand mining disrupts water supply, villagers protest

The residents of the village, located near Uthiramerur, had been complaining of water woes for the past two months. According to them, the drinking water pipelines to their village were damaged by the lorries transporting sand illegally. After raising complaints failed to bring about any result, nearly 100 villagers gathered on Salavakkam-Chengalpattu road and blocked the traffic on Tuesday at 8 am.
On information, a team from Salavakkam police station rushed to the spot and held peace talks with the protesting villagers. They then asked the police to crackdown on the illegal sand mining from Paalar river bed during the night.
The villagers sought an end to illegal sand mining and demanded that the damaged pines be repaired. After the police promised to take action, they dispersed at 9.30 am.Â
