Awareness on sexual problems on the rise, says sexologist

Discussions on sex and everything related to it have long been merely a thing of the bedroom. However, today, with increased awareness, deliberations on the topic have moved to the board room as well, said Chennai-based sexologist Dr Narayana Reddy.

He was speaking on the last day of the International conference on sexology organised by Asia Oceania Federation for Sexology and Council of Sex Education and Parenthood International, held in the city on Sunday.

Stating that patients have always been open about discussing their sexual problems, he said, “The biggest challenge has always been the lack of adequate facilities to cater to those in need of treatment. Besides, the lack of doctors specialised in this field too served as a deterrent.”

As a result of that, patients prefer approaching quacks, who advertise various drugs for arousal. However, today, the awareness is certainly much better – both among doctors as well as the public. Everything has improved. We also have new gadgets that can pick up sexual problems, said Dr Reddy.

The three-day event, held alongside the 34th edition of the National conference on Sexology, focussed on various aspects including domestic violence, where the husband seeks relief by divorce, the importance of having sex, novel ways to improve the mind, mood and sex as well as the development of porn video and sexual service industries.

“The World Health Organisation, too, which never gave any importance to sexual problems, has now listed it among the top most concerns. The lack of any initiation among couples to have sex has become a cause for concern,” he said.

“People enjoy jokes about sex. However, with work stress and other problems that most couples are buried with, people don’t have any time for bedroom and sex. Such factors are always brought up in conferences. Discussions on these challenges help the public to realise the need for them to pay attention to their sex lives,” Dr Reddy added.
