River restoration: Work on fences, parks to begin soon
After clearing the encroachments along the banks of Adyar and Cooum rivers, the Greater Chennai City Corporation has now begun works to set up fences, parks, pathways and other beautification works at a cost of Rs 210.18 crore, said Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan.

Fences would be developed from Napier bridge to Maduravoyal Outer Ring Road on the bank of Cooum at the cost Rs 45.68 crore to prevent encroachments. Also, parks would be built at Rs 39.87 crore in nine places on that stretch.Â
Currently, work is underway to erect fences on South, West and East Cooum roads, Boodha Perumal Temple Road, MGR Colony and Sivanandham Salai, the official said in a press statement here on Friday.Â
For Adyar river, Rs 51.69 crore has been allotted to set up protective fences from Thiru-Vi-Ka bridge to Meenambakkam; Rs 71.50 crore to build 11 parks; and another Rs 1.44 crore for the beautification of three bridges on the stretch.Â
These are the part of efforts taken by the Corporation to restore Cooum, Adayar and other water channels in the city that fall under its purview.Â
