A memorable encounter, something which had a huge impact on me, happened during a bus ride home. I was travelling in a bus that is usually always crowded because it is part of an important route.

On most days, there aren’t any fights or incidents that break out, but once, soon after I got in, an old man got in behind me — he was probably in his mid-50s. None of the seats were free so we were both standing, holding on to the rail. Passengers here are normally very friendly so if an elderly person is standing, youngsters give way for them to sit.

Similarly, the old man was expecting someone to stand up and give way for him, I guess, but no one budged. He spotted a young chap, probably in his 20s, sitting down and looking outside the window. He began yelling at him saying, “Don’t you have any sense or respect for elders? You can see I’m standing here but why aren’t you getting up?”

The boy apologised and stood up, and that’s when some other passengers and I noticed he didn’t have a leg. Despite that, he moved to the isle using his crutch to let the elder man sit and I was literally moved to tears by his action and humility.
