Addressing the function called to welcome her on Monday, she said the Madras High Court has several firsts to its credit, including the first Indian high court judge, the first Indian advocate general, the first Indian chief justice in a high court and the first Indian law report.

Stating that she was privileged to become a part of the prestigious Madras High Court, she said, “Glorious history, customs, conventions and lofty traditions and a galaxy of great judges and reputed lawyers of eminence have combined to confer upon the High Court of Madras a unique eminent status.”

Later, replying to the felicitation accorded to her at the Madras Bar Association, the Chief Justice said, “Every practicing advocate must realise the nature of the functions he/she is expected to perform-that he/she is something more than the fuel in the engine of law. The practicing advocate functions as a catalyst between those who judge and the majority of those whose cases are to be judged.”

“Thus, a strong bar and strong judiciary is essential for the maintenance of the rule of law. The bench is a branch of the bar and together they constitute the justice system. Neither the bench alone nor the bar by itself can secure justice to the people,” she added.

Earlier, Advocate General Vijay Narayan, welcoming the Chief Justice said the Madras High Court has been blessed twice in quick succession with the appointment of another woman at its helm, following the elevation of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee to the Supreme Court.
