New government project to help Class 10 slow learners

Coming to the aid of late bloomers among the Class 10 students of government schools who often struggle in their board examination, the State government has launched Slow Learners Achievement Programme (SLAP), a special project designed to support them. The project would be initially taken up on pilot basis in Tamil Nadu, officials said.

A senior Education department official said that this project was designed to meet the requirements of the slow learners identified in Class 10 of government schools. “Some children lag behind in academic achievements compared to their counterparts in the normal school course. Hence, a special programme, SLAP (Slow Learners Achievement Programme), was designed to provide additional support to them for their normal school course so that these children would perform better in their board examinations and could achieve desirable results,” he added.

Claiming that the special project would offer ample learning opportunities to the slow learning children in terms of remedial instruction and help them to gain confidence to perform well in their Class 10 board examinations, he said SLAP learning centres were organised in the ten blocks in each district to meet this requirement.

According to the official, the centres would run on almost all the weekends, and also during vacations following term examinations. Classes would be handled by trained (regular) teacher experts, supported by school teachers (voluntarily), and supervised by appointed centre heads (headmasters).

He said the training programme would develop strategies that would enhance the performance of secondary children and aid them to perform well in board exams.

“Before starting the programme, a district level execution team for administration and district level core team for developing study materials and packages were formulated and modules were developed,” the official said.

The official said that a periodic impact assessment study would be conducted on the implementation of the project to assess the academic improvement of the slow learning children who are getting remedial measures in the SLAP learning.
